Stainless Steel Channel

Stainless steel channel is a type of long steel product with a groove-shaped cross-section, falling under the category of stainless steel profiles. Thanks to its excellent corrosion resistance and high strength, it is widely used in sectors such as construction, machinery, and the chemical industry.
Stainless steel channels can be classified based on production processes and material grades.

Classification by production process:


1. Hot-rolled channel (GB standard channel): Formed by rolling steel billets heated to high temperatures (1100°C–1200°C). It is characterized by a uniform internal microstructure, low residual stress, and good weldability.
2. Cold-formed welded channel: Produced by cold-forming stainless steel coils followed by high-frequency welding. Its advantages include flexible sizing, the ability to customize non-standard dimensions, and superior surface quality.




Classification by material grade:


Austenitic stainless steel: Includes grades such as 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, and 310S. Among these, 304 is the most widely used general-purpose stainless steel, while 316L offers superior pitting and corrosion resistance due to the addition of molybdenum (Mo).
Economical stainless steel: Includes grades such as 201 and 202.
Duplex stainless steel: Such as 2205, which combines high strength with excellent corrosion resistance.

Production Process and Performance Characteristics
Production process: The core production method for stainless steel channels is hot rolling. The process involves heating stainless steel billets to over 1100°C and then passing them through multiple stages—such as rough rolling and finish rolling—to ultimately form the required groove shape.




Production process of stainless steel channels


1. Raw material preparation: The primary raw material is stainless steel coil; common grades include 304, 316, and 321. During production, the raw materials undergo quality inspections covering parameters such as chemical composition and mechanical properties.
2. Coil uncoiling: The stainless steel coil is unrolled according to specific requirements, typically using an uncoiler. After uncoiling, the steel strip undergoes cleaning and pickling to remove surface oil and oxide layers. 3. Steel Plate Cutting: The unfolded stainless steel plate is cut to specified dimensions. Various cutting methods are employed, with common techniques including shearing, flame cutting, and plasma cutting.
4. Bending and Forming: The cut steel plate undergoes bending and forming, typically using a roll bending machine or a press brake. The process is adjusted and controlled according to specific product requirements and standards.
5. Welding: The formed stainless steel plate is welded. Common welding methods include TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding and MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding. Welding operations must ensure weld quality and structural integrity while preventing deformation and cracking.
6. Surface Treatment: After welding, the stainless steel channel undergoes surface treatment, including grinding and polishing. This process enhances the product's surface finish and aesthetic appeal.
7. Inspection and Packaging: Finished stainless steel channels undergo quality inspections, including visual checks, dimensional measurements, and chemical composition analysis. Qualified products are packaged to ensure their integrity and safety.




Core Properties:
1. Corrosion Resistance: A dense, chromium-rich oxide film on the surface is key to its corrosion resistance. Grade 304 resists corrosion from substances such as nitric acid (at concentrations ≤65%), while Grade 316L is better suited for environments containing chloride ions, such as marine and chemical processing settings.
2. Heat Resistance: Grade 304 stainless steel channels can withstand continuous operating temperatures up to 870°C, with a maximum short-term operating temperature of 925°C.
3. Mechanical Properties: Taking Grade 304 as an example, the yield strength is typically no less than 205 MPa.




Applications of Stainless Steel Channels:


1. Architectural Structures: Used for curtain wall framing, stair frameworks, steel structure supports, etc.
2. Industrial Equipment: Used in the manufacture of corrosion-resistant chemical equipment, frameworks for food and pharmaceutical production machinery, sewage treatment units, etc.
3. Machinery Manufacturing: Used for CNC machine tool bases, automated assembly line frameworks, piping supports, etc.
4. Transportation: Used for structural components in ships, support frames for offshore platforms, etc. 5. Municipal and Civil Applications: Fabrication of outdoor fencing, warehouse shelving, outdoor billboards, etc.
