Cold Rolled Stainless Steel Sheet

Cold-rolled stainless steel sheets are flat plates cut to length from cold-rolled stainless steel strips through a cross-cutting (leveling) process. They combine the high precision, excellent surface finish, and ease of use of fixed-length products, making them one of the most widely used stainless steel semi-finished products.




Classification of Cold-Rolled Stainless Steel Sheets:


By Steel Grade:
Austenitic: Such as 304, 304L, 316, 316L, etc. Non-magnetic, excellent corrosion resistance. 304 is the most widely used "food-grade" stainless steel.
Ferritic: Such as 430, 409L, etc. Magnetic, relatively inexpensive.
Martensitic: Such as 410, 420, etc. Magnetic, can be strengthened through heat treatment.

By Surface Condition:
2B: Most common, silvery-white luster, smooth and flat.
BA: Bright annealed surface, mirror-like effect, more delicate and smooth.
No.1: Surface after hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling.
Other finishes include 2D (matte), frosted, brushed, and 8K mirror finishes, among other decorative surfaces.


Production of Cold-Rolled Stainless Steel Sheets:


Cold Rolling: Hot-rolled stainless steel coils are rolled in multiple passes at room temperature to achieve the target thickness.
Annealing: Eliminates work hardening caused by cold rolling and restores the material's plasticity.
Pickling: Removes the oxide layer formed during annealing to obtain a smooth surface.
Leveling: Optimizes plate shape and surface quality.
Slitting and Leveling: Slitting or cross-cutting (leveling) the steel coils into plates of the required lengths.




Performance Characteristics of Cold-Rolled Stainless Steel Plates


Austenitic Stainless Steel (e.g., 304):
Mechanical Properties: Tensile strength ≥ 515 MPa, Yield strength ≥ 205 MPa, Elongation after fracture ≥ 40%.
Physical Properties: Non-magnetic, wide operating temperature range (e.g., 304 -196℃ to 800℃).
Corrosion Resistance: Excellent corrosion resistance and heat resistance.
Ferritic stainless steel (e.g., 430): Offers good corrosion resistance, but its formability is slightly worse than austenitic steel; it is magnetic.
Chemical Composition:




Cold-rolled stainless steel sheets have the following main characteristics:
1. High surface smoothness. During the cold rolling process, the steel sheet undergoes multiple rolling, stretching, and trimming processes, resulting in a smoother and more delicate surface, less prone to unevenness and wrinkles, exhibiting a higher degree of finish. This smooth surface is not only aesthetically pleasing but also easy to clean and maintain, meeting the hygiene requirements of many specialized industries.
2. Higher hardness. During the cold rolling process, the material undergoes cold working at room temperature, resulting in grain refinement and significantly increased material hardness. Compared to hot-rolled stainless steel, cold-rolled stainless steel is more wear-resistant, more scratch-resistant, and has better overload resistance. Therefore, cold-rolled stainless steel sheets are commonly used in machinery manufacturing, the automotive industry, and other fields to manufacture high-hardness, high-strength parts.
3. Better corrosion resistance. Stainless steel itself possesses good corrosion resistance, but cold-rolled stainless steel sheets exhibit even stronger corrosion resistance due to their finer grains, denser grain boundaries, and more orderly crystal arrangement. Cold-rolled stainless steel sheets effectively resist external oxidation, acids, alkalis, salt spray, and other corrosive substances, thus ensuring product lifespan and quality.
4. Cold-rolled stainless steel sheets offer superior processing performance. Due to their higher hardness, cold-rolled stainless steel sheets can undergo a wider range of complex processing techniques, such as bending, cutting, and punching. This significantly improves the flexibility and versatility of product processing, meeting the diverse processing requirements of various industries.



Common Applications of Cold-Rolled Stainless Steel Sheets


1. Food and Medical Equipment
Cold-rolled stainless steel sheets, meeting hygiene standards, are the preferred material for food processing equipment (such as dairy production lines and beer fermentation tanks) and medical devices (such as surgical instruments and sterilizers). Their smooth surface (roughness Ra≤0.8μm) reduces bacterial adhesion, while the corrosion resistance of 304 or 316L grades protects against disinfectants and organic acids, ensuring long-term rust-free and product-free use.
2. Architectural Decoration Industry
In building curtain walls, elevator panels, and interior decoration, cold-rolled stainless steel sheets, through surface treatments such as wire drawing and mirror polishing, combine aesthetics and functionality. For example, the exterior facade of the Shanghai Tower uses 8K mirror-finish cold-rolled stainless steel sheets with a reflectivity exceeding 90%, enhancing the building's visual appeal while its weather-resistant design resists urban pollution corrosion.
3. Chemical and Energy Equipment Manufacturing
Equipment such as chemical storage tanks, heat exchangers, and piping systems are subject to prolonged contact with acidic and alkaline media. The corrosion resistance of cold-rolled stainless steel sheets (such as 316L and duplex 2205) can significantly extend the lifespan of these devices. In the nuclear power industry, its low activation characteristics make it a key material for reactor pressure vessels, ensuring structural stability under radiation conditions.
4. Automotive and Home Appliance Industries
Automotive components such as exhaust pipes and fuel tanks utilize cold-rolled stainless steel sheets, improving safety through high-temperature resistance and corrosion resistance.
