200 series cold-rolled stainless steel coils are products made from 200 series hot-rolled stainless steel coils through processes such as cold rolling, annealing, and pickling at room temperature. Compared to hot-rolled coils, cold-rolled coils offer thinner thickness, higher dimensional accuracy, better surface quality, and superior mechanical properties.

Performance Characteristics of 200 Series Cold-Rolled Stainless Steel Coils

The cold rolling process significantly increases the strength and hardness of the material, but may also reduce its plasticity.
Core Advantages
1. Low Cost: Due to its low nickel content, the price is much lower than that of 300 series stainless steels such as 304.
2. High Strength and Hardness: The hardness is typically high; for example, the Vickers hardness (HV) of 201 cold-rolled strip can reach 280°-420°. This high hardness makes it ideal for use as decorative panels, allowing for thinner and flatter finished products, with a polished finish that even surpasses that of 304 products.
3. Good Processing Performance: It possesses high toughness and plasticity, making it suitable for rolling, stamping, and other processing methods.
Main limitations:
1. Limited corrosion resistance: Due to its "nickel-saving" characteristics, the corrosion resistance of 200 series stainless steel is generally lower than that of 300 series (such as 304) and 400 series, making it unsuitable for outdoor and highly corrosive environments.
2. Differentiated processing performance: Grades with low nickel content (such as 1%Ni) have poor ductility and are not suitable for deep drawing and other processing requiring high plasticity; while grades with high nickel content (such as 4%Ni) can be used for making cups, cookware, etc.

Production process of 200 series cold-rolled stainless steel coils

The production of 200 series cold-rolled coils is a precise process, mainly including the following steps:
1. Raw material preparation: AISI 200 series hot-rolled stainless steel coils are selected as raw materials.
2. Uncoiling: The hot-rolled coil is uncoiled on a seated uncoiler.
3. Cold rolling: This is the core step. A reversible cold rolling mill is used to roll the steel strip in multiple passes at room temperature. By precisely controlling the reduction and tension, the steel strip is gradually rolled to the target thickness. For ultra-thin specifications, a precision 20-roll mill is used.
4. Annealing: Cold-rolled steel strip becomes hard and brittle, requiring annealing in a bright annealing furnace to restore its plasticity. The heating temperature typically reaches 1070℃～1100℃.
5. Pickling: Removes the oxide layer formed on the surface during annealing to obtain a smooth surface.
6. Leveling and Slitting: Finally, leveling is performed to improve the sheet shape, and the strip is slitted into coils of different specifications according to customer requirements.

The surface quality of 200 series cold-rolled stainless steel coils is a major advantage. 

Common surface finishes include:
2B surface: The most common, silvery-white luster, smooth and flat.
BA surface: A mirror-like surface.
No.4 (brushed finish), HL (hairline finish): Decorative surfaces.
Colored surfaces: Such as yellow titanium, rose gold, black titanium, etc.

Main Applications of 200 Series Cold-Rolled Stainless Steel Coils

Due to its performance and cost advantages, 200 series cold-rolled coils are mainly used in indoor environments where corrosion resistance requirements are not high.
Architectural Decoration: Interior decoration and building materials such as curtain walls, furniture, door panels, elevators, kitchenware, etc. Due to its high hardness, its polished brightness is even superior to 304 products.
Daily Utensils: Water cups, cookware, tableware, utensils, etc. (Grades containing 4% Ni have performance comparable to 304).
Industrial and Home Appliances: Electrical cabinets, industrial motors, home appliances, medical device components, etc.
Others: Decorative tubes, stainless steel roofing sheets, chemical containers, automotive parts, etc.

200 series stainless steel is not a food-grade material. In highly corrosive environments (such as outdoor, chemical, and marine environments), 304 or 316 (300 series stainless steel) must be selected.

Choosing 200 series cold-rolled coils is essentially a trade-off between performance and cost. While it offers a highly cost-effective solution in specific scenarios, its limited corrosion resistance means it cannot completely replace 300 series stainless steel. With the improvement of industry standards and advancements in production technology, 200 series stainless steel is evolving towards greater standardization and precision.

Standards for cold rolled stainless steel coil & sheet vary from country to country. The following are some common Chinese, British, American and Japanese national standards:

These national standards stipulate the chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions and surface quality requirements of cold rolled stainless steel coil & sheet to ensure that the product quality and performance meet the corresponding standards. In international trade, these national standards are usually referred to to formulate product specifications and inspection requirements.

There are many grades of 200 series stainless steel, with performance differences mainly reflected in their chemical composition, especially the content of nickel (Ni) and manganese (Mn).

201: The most common grade. Its nickel content is usually around 1%, while its manganese content is relatively high. Based on slight adjustments to the composition, manufacturer-designated grades such as J1, J2, and J5 have emerged. For example, the commonly known J2 grade has a composition of approximately 12Cr14Mn10Ni2N.
202: Has a relatively high nickel content, usually around 4%, and its corrosion resistance and processing properties are closer to those of 304 stainless steel.

Key Elements and Their Roles:
Nickel (Ni): Higher Ni content results in better corrosion resistance and processing plasticity (such as deep drawing performance).
Manganese (Mn) and Nitrogen (N): As substitutes for nickel, their main role is to stabilize the austenitic structure and improve the strength of the steel.

Chemical composition

201 is belong to high manganese and low nickel stainless steel, nickel content is low, corrosion resistance is poor, It’s more easy to get rusty if the deactivation film were destroyed, for example the surface is scratched. In China Series 201 is composed by J1 J3 J4 etc.
